The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced on March 11 that it has launched Section 301 investigations into 16 economies. The list includes China, South Korea, Japan, the European Union, Singapore, Switzerland, Norway, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Mexico, and India.

Under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act, the U.S. government is authorized to investigate and respond to foreign trade practices it considers unfair or discriminatory, including imposing tariffs if necessary.

The move follows a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that found certain tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to be unlawful. Analysts believe the new investigations may be aimed at creating alternative legal grounds for potential tariff measures.

Industry observers note that any new trade actions could introduce additional uncertainty to global supply chains and international trade. Businesses are advised to monitor policy developments and plan accordingly.
